Staircase: The Vertical Height

Staircase is basically used to connect two different levels of height. Vertical height or distance split smaller, connecting different levels of elevation. Staircase can be done in different materials,

shape, and sizes.

Some of the Materials used for the staircase as follows:

      Concrete (Reinforced)

      Stone slabs

      Fabrication metal

      Solid wood

      Ply wood / board

      Brick

     Metal with Stone, wood, sheera board, concrete, glass etc

Glass and many other types of materials can be used according to space created with design theme and the budget materials can be decided according to design.

Main things to concentrate before designing staircase for the particular space is, Practical connectivity with the space organization and division of the treads and risers (tread : is the horizontal plane or the surface we step on,   Riser: is the vertical difference of height between two steps), Width of the stairs depends on the purpose of the stair and the place like Residential, Commercial, Semi Residential, Public space, Institutional, Hospital, Industrial etc,.. 

     Architectural design of the stair also plays and important role in ease access and use. Design cannot be just concentrated by its appearance and executed, it also has to be structurally and technically strong  as it has to match with the designed space and purpose.

A standard riser of the staircase is 6 inches.

Rises are given is different spaces from 4 inches up to 8 inches. Beyond 8 inches is said to be difficult in access and medically harmful for the knee.

Landing should be must given either from starting 3 feet of mid landing or above 7 feet.

Corner (winders) steps should be avoided unless the foot space on the middle of the tread is minimum 11 inches, its always safe to design without corner steps or winders. 

A comfortable foot space is with the technically arrived ratio of the riser accelerates the ease movement of access, anti-skid good quality material is best suited for the treads.
